DISTRIBUTION

Present distribution of Rubus fruticosus in Victoria

Common name: Blackberry, European blackberry
Family: Rosaceae (rose family)
Scientific name: Rubus fruticosus Linnaeus aggregate

European blackberry (Rubus fruitcosus L. agg.), the plant that is commonly referred to as ‘weedy blackberry’ in Victoria consists of 15 closely related, but distinct species. Within Victoria at least 9 of these species occur, some with subspecies and possibly hybrids.

Habitat:

Blackberry can be found in areas with greater than 760 mm annual rainfall, mainly on fertile soils. The blackberry aggregate has probably reached the climatic limits (rainfall and temperature) of its potential range in Victoria, however, individual species have not: some are widespread, others still very restricted in distribution.

The worst blackberry problems are often in areas where there is bare, soft soil, high nutrient availability, moist conditions, and high light intensity.
